Getting married should be the best time in your romantic life, but without proper preparation, it can be an organizational nightmare. Every bride should look flawless on their wedding day, whether you’re going for a professional or going the DIY route. However, a wedding is more than just a day-it’s more like a marathon than just a race.
Planning a wedding requires a lot of work (not to mention, money). This is basically a universal truth. From booking venues, catering food and sending out all these Rsvp’s, the timing of the big day can be a little fuzzy. However, in order to save some extra cash (and eliminate the extra stress), you decide to do your own wedding day make-up. Creating your own beautiful look can be a bit nerve-wracking because it’s not just any day; it’s your big day. In addition to making sure your makeup is kept, you want it to look damn good in the photo.
TIPS TO DOING YOUR WEDDING MAKEUP
We have collected all the tips you need to apply your makeup like a pro, from professionals. Read on for 11 expert recommended tips and tricks to create a beautiful look on your wedding day yourself.
-
YOU NEED TO PRACTICE:
No matter how well-versed you may be in makeup, you don’t want to wait until your wedding day to apply your wedding day look for the first time. “Practice, practice, practice until you have the look you want,” says Liz Fuller, a professional makeup artist based in Boston. Then record the products you use so that on the wedding day you can refer to your notes to remind you which products you used and how to use them.”
-
INVEST IN FACIALS:
Perfect skin is the best canvas for your makeup. Make-up artist Hillary Kline says the beautiful skin on the wedding day is all in preparation. “If the budget allows, start having facials every month-at least three to four times—before the big day,” she said. These will help firm and brighten your complexion.”
-
SET UP A PRIVATE SPACE:
Make-up artist Béke Beau says that you need not only time to put on makeup, but also a calm environment to do it. “The prepared room can be very busy at times and well-meaning bridal party members can distract you, so it’s important to have some privacy to relax and make up,” she said.
-
APPLY A PRIMER:
Jo Levy Makeup expert and artist Jo Levy Makeup says that after you moisturize your skin, you will want to apply a thin layer of primer. “Primer can be used as a temporary correction agent to fill large pores, smooth fine lines and some deeper lines,” she said. “The different textures of the primer will also help to prepare the skin. For example, a mattifying primer will help instantly reduce excess shine, while a lighting primer will give the skin an instant, radiant base makeup.”
-
APPLY THE RIGHT FOUNDATION:
Find a foundation that suits your skin type with the help of an expert, Kline says, and create a natural look. “Powder foundation helps set up your makeup and also helps prevent your face from looking greasy in photos,” she said. “But if you add too much powder, you run the risk of making your skin look dry and aging. The phrase “less is more” applies to this.”
-
INVEST IN A CREAMY FORMULAR-BASED CONCEALER:
“Let’s face it: brides will be busy with last-minute tasks, staying up late, attending rehearsal dinners, and more,” Kline said. “What about those unwanted dark circles or blemishes that suddenly appear?” Make sure you apply foundation first and then gently pat with your fingertips on areas that look dark.”
-
MAKE SURE YOUR BROWS ARE DEFINED:
You don’t have to be born with bushy eyebrows to make a statement on your wedding day. “Eyebrows are the defining feature of your face, so if you don’t have the talent to have full, perfectly shaped eyebrows, come up with a long-lasting eyebrow product that defines what you have, always with your natural shape,” Beau said.”
-
WEAR WATER-PROOF MASCARA:
Not only do you want your mascara to stay in place through any stray tears, but the waterproof formula should also withstand the heat. “For summer brides, the heat causes heavier mascara to droop and melt-which is bad,” Rubin said.
-
LAYER YOUR LIP COLORS:
Layering on your lips will ensure a long-lasting finish, Levy says. “First condition your lips with lip balm to help prepare and soften, then apply a layer of light lipstick with a satin or cream formula,” she says, and then swipe your lipstick a second time to establish its color. Or, if you like to add volume and a defined look, draw the lip line along or just outside the natural lip line and feather the color onto the lipstick. Press the lips together to set. Also completely optional: complete the multidimensional look with a light layer of gloss.”
-
SPLURGE ON A SETTING SPRAY:
Fuller says that the key to really making your makeup look last is to use a makeup setting spray. “Some recipes last 16 to 18 hours,” she said. “They protect against cosmetic wear and tear, and they’re sweat-proof and waterproof-although you still can’t jump into the pool.”
-
CARRY ALONG A BLOTTING SHEET:
Fuller says that while you may be tempted to put a pressed powder in your wallet, you should never re-apply the powder. Instead, she recommends using a blotting sheet. “Always use oil-absorbing paper to absorb oil,” she said. Blotting sheet does not disturb the makeup-they just lift the oil for a matte finish.”
